Chapter Six

Lionel

I would sleep under the Devil’s wings and wake with his arms around me for all eternity. That was the first thought that rang through my mind as I shook off sleep. The second was that it felt so good when he kissed the back of my neck, and very soon after that, I wasn’t thinking at all, because we were back to a lazy, comfortable kind of lovemaking, both on our sides, him taking me from behind.

And yes, I would probably be doing that for all the rest of time as well, unless Lucifer was in a mood to tie me up and do whatever.

We had a sort of slow morning after finally getting out of bed, and I insisted on spending it in Lucifer’s doorless office to finally, finally get a good look at the books he had about apples.

Metatron brought some coffee and mumbled about how it was really actually possible to take a book out of this room and have breakfast at the dining room table, which she had set.

I apologized and vowed to enjoy her food after some reading. But what I really needed from Lucifer’s book hoard was to just be able to go through the shelves and pull things off them. I glanced at the inlaid symbols representing the divine magic he’d told me bits and pieces about and wondered whether this could really be… home, with an office, my office next door. The thought made me smile.

But there was still a case that needed solving. I focused back on the task at hand. “You are positive none of the spells you have on the books are going to do anything to me?” I asked again as I glanced at a smallish volume bound in red.

“Of course, I’m sure. And besides, it is human magic users who enjoy offensive protection spells on prize volumes. I find it rather silly and tedious.” Lucifer was at his massive desk, his feet propped up on it. He barely glanced up from his e-reader. He’d said something about a new post-apocalyptic monster novel dropping, and I had decided I didn’t need to know any more details.

“What do yours do for protection, then?” I asked as I pulled the red book toward me and started leafing through it. It was like a botanical treaty almost, except shorter, and concerning itself with magical fruit and flora exclusively.

“Let me show you.” He put his e-reader down and walked across the runes and symbols in the floor that marked out the five magics and pulled a random book off the shelf next to me. I felt him do magic to it. “Here. Open this.”

I did. “Holy fuck. This is, well. Exceedingly pornographic.”

He grinned at me like a very hungry cat. “I’d like to see you in exceedingly pornographic poses. Do you think you’re bendy enough to try this?” he asked and pointed at a page in the book.

“I think you’ve seen me like that. Really, how much more is there to try?”

“Oh, my love, there is always something else to try.
